Choosing a spirit wash yeast is easier when you first decide what you want the pack to include. A yeast sachet, a wash pack and a full production pack can all make a good wash, but they do not contain the same ingredients.

Quick answer
- For an 8 litre Air Still wash, choose the Still Spirits Air Still Fermentation Kit and add 2.4kg dextrose.
- For a simple 25 litre setup with the main ingredients already matched, choose a complete production pack.
- If you already have sugar or dextrose, compare yeast sachets and wash packs instead.
- For a cleaner, lower-odour neutral wash, allow more time and choose a quality-led option. For maximum speed, choose a speed-led option and control the wash temperature carefully.
- For grain, molasses or another flavourful wash, use a specialist distiller’s yeast and the recipe-specific nutrients or enzymes, rather than treating it like an ordinary neutral sugar wash.
Yeast sachet, wash pack or production pack?
| Buying route | Normally included | You still need | Best when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turbo yeast sachet | Yeast plus its matched nutrients | Sugar or dextrose; usually carbon and clearing agent if wanted | You already have the other ingredients or want to choose them separately |
| Turbo or wash pack | Yeast, fermentation carbon and clearing agents in one pack | Sugar or dextrose, water and fermentation equipment | You want a matched treatment pack but prefer to buy the fermentable separately |
| Complete production pack | Yeast, the stated quantity of Turbo Sugar and a clearing agent; the Turbo Sugar contains activated carbon | Water, sanitised fermentation equipment and any product-specific extras | You want the least guesswork for a standard 25 litre wash |
| Specialist distiller’s yeast | A yeast selected for a particular spirit style | Recipe-specific fermentables, nutrients and sometimes mash enzymes | You want whisky, rum or another characterful wash rather than a neutral sugar wash |
Always check the individual product description before starting. Pack contents and the required wash volume can differ, even when two products use similar wording.
Complete 25 litre production packs
| Production pack | Main priority | Fermentation direction | What the pack supplies |
|---|---|---|---|
| Still Spirits Classic 6, 6kg | Reliable, relatively low-odour wash with broad temperature tolerance | Allow approximately 4 to 10 days depending on temperature and follow the sachet | Classic 6 yeast, 6kg Turbo Sugar and two-part Turbo Clear |
| Still Spirits Classic 8, 8kg | Higher-yield Still Spirits route | Typically about 5 to 10 days in suitable conditions | Classic 8 yeast, 8kg Turbo Sugar and two-part Turbo Clear |
| Alcotec 24 Hour, 6kg | Maximum speed | Designed for about 24 hours under suitable, carefully controlled conditions | Alcotec 24 yeast, 6kg Turbo Sugar and Alcotec Clear |
| Alcotec 48 Hour, 6kg | Fast 6kg method | Designed for about 48 hours under suitable conditions | Alcotec 48 yeast, 6kg Turbo Sugar and Alcotec Clear |
| Alcotec Turbo 6, 6kg | General-purpose Alcotec wash | Approximately three days in suitable conditions | Alcotec Turbo 6 yeast, 6kg Turbo Sugar and Alcotec Clear |
| Pure Distilling Ultra-Pure 6, 6kg | Clean, low-odour neutral wash | Follow the current pack temperature and timing directions | Ultra-Pure 6 yeast, 6kg Turbo Sugar and Crystal Clear |
| Pure Distilling Premium, 8kg | Maximum-yield Pure Distilling method | The 8kg method takes longer than its lower-sugar fast method | Premium yeast, 8kg Turbo Sugar and Crystal Clear |
The timing figures are supplier targets, not a reason to distil by the clock. Confirm that fermentation has finished and that the hydrometer reading is stable before clearing or distilling.
If you already have sugar or dextrose
A yeast sachet is the flexible choice. Popular starting points include Still Spirits Classic 6 for dependable performance, Still Spirits Pure Turbo for a quality-led neutral wash, Pure Distilling Premium Spirit Yeast for a clean high-yield option, and Alcotec’s 24 Hour, 48 Hour and Turbo 6 options.
If you want the carbon and clearing stages matched as well, consider the Still Spirits Pure Turbo Pack, Still Spirits Classic 6 Turbo Pack or Pure Distilling Premium Wash Pack. These packs still need the specified sugar or dextrose.
Temperature matters as much as the product name
Fast or high-sugar fermentations generate heat. Measure the wash temperature, not only the room temperature, leave adequate fermenter headspace and stay inside the range printed on the sachet. Too much heat can stress the yeast and reduce wash quality; too little can slow or stop fermentation.
When a specialist yeast is the better choice
Neutral turbo yeast is intended to make an efficient base for later distillation and flavouring. A whisky, rum or grain recipe has a different goal: preserving useful fermentation character. For example, Distiller’s Yeast Whiskey is selected for whisky-style washes and is used with the appropriate dark-spirit nutrient and, for grain mashes, the enzymes called for by the recipe.
Before you distil
- Clean and sanitise the fermenter and every item that will touch the wash.
- Use the exact sugar or dextrose quantity, water volume and starting temperature stated for the product.
- Control the wash temperature throughout fermentation.
- Confirm fermentation is complete with a stable hydrometer reading.
- Degas thoroughly before adding a clearing agent, then allow the wash to settle and transfer it carefully.
