Distillers malts and grains provide the fermentable base and flavour foundation for whisky, bourbon and other grain-based spirit recipes. The right combination depends on the recipe, desired flavour and mashing process, with base malt supplying enzymes and speciality grains adding smoke, spice, sweetness or a lighter grain character.
Choosing malt and grain for distilling
- Single malt base: Gladfield Distillers Malt provides high extract and diastatic power and can be used as the main malt in a single malt whisky recipe.
- Peated character: Gladfield Peat Smoked Malt adds a mild, soft earthy smoke and can be blended with distillers malt to suit the intended profile.
- Bourbon-style grain bills: Gladfield Maize Malt provides a mild grain character and is suitable for bourbon whisky recipes.
- Rye and wheat: Gladfield Rye Malt adds light rye spice, while Gladfield Wheat Malt offers a cleaner wheat character.
High proportions of maize, rye or wheat can make lautering more difficult. Adding non-fermentable Gladfield Oat Hulls can improve the filter bed and reduce the chance of a stuck mash. Follow a proven grain bill and mashing schedule, and order the required weight shown by the recipe.
