Spirit filtering—also called carbon polishing—can reduce selected unwanted aromas, flavours and colour from suitable distilled neutral spirit before it is flavoured or bottled. It is most useful for neutral spirit. It is not a safety treatment and cannot correct unsafe distillate, poor separation or a seriously flawed fermentation and distillation process.

When should neutral spirit be filtered?
Filter after distillation and collection, but before adding flavouring, sugar, oak or liqueur ingredients. Dilute the spirit to the range specified by the filter or carbon manufacturer before treatment. Different systems have different maximum strengths, so there is no safe universal ABV rule.
Do not routinely carbon-filter a finished whisky, rum, brandy, gin or liqueur. Activated carbon may remove character you intended to keep. If a supplier gives a product-specific method for a particular spirit style, trial it on a small measured portion first.

Cartridge filters or loose carbon?
Cartridge systems are convenient and keep the carbon contained. Their cartridge shape, seals and capacity are system-specific. A cartridge that looks similar is not automatically interchangeable.
Loose-carbon systems give more choice over carbon form and loading, but the media must suit the filter. Grain size affects packing and flow; transferring quantities or instructions from one carbon product to another can create poor performance or blockages.

Do not confuse finishing carbon with carbon added during fermentation. Primary or turbo carbon is used at a different process stage and has different clearing instructions. It is not automatically a refill for a finished-spirit filter.
General filtering process
- Confirm the spirit is suitable. Filtering does not make unsafe alcohol safe and should not be used to conceal a faulty process.
- Read both instructions. Check the filter manual and the cartridge or carbon label, including maximum ABV, batch capacity and replacement interval.
- Dilute as directed. Use suitable water and confirm strength with an alcoholmeter at the temperature specified for the instrument.
- Clean and assemble the equipment. Inspect seals, taps, housings and collection vessels. Water-test replacement parts before introducing spirit.
- Prepare the cartridge or carbon exactly as stated. Rinsing, soaking, loading and settling methods vary by product.
- Control the flow. Do not force spirit through faster than the system directs; adequate contact with carbon is essential.
- Collect in a clean, alcohol-compatible vessel. Keep the system covered and away from ignition sources.
- Replace the media at its stated limit. Do not judge cartridge life only by whether liquid still passes through it.
What filtering can—and cannot—fix
Carbon polishing may improve a neutral spirit with minor unwanted aroma or flavour. It cannot reverse poor cuts, remove every contaminant, correct an unsuitable ferment, or turn an unsafe product into safe alcohol. If the collected spirit is questionable, stop and review the fermentation, distillation and separation process rather than repeatedly filtering it.
After filtering
