Distilling yeast should be chosen for the wash you are making, the desired flavour or purity, the amount of fermentable sugar and the expected fermentation temperature. Some products contain yeast only, while complete packs may also include carbon and a clearing agent.
Choosing a distilling yeast
- Clean neutral washes: Options such as Pure Distilling Ultra-Pure 6 Spirit Yeast and the Still Spirits Pure Turbo Pack are intended for customers prioritising a clean neutral base.
- Convenient all-round packs: The Still Spirits Classic 8 Turbo Pack includes yeast, Turbo Carbon and Turbo Clear, reducing the number of separate products required.
- Hot conditions: Still Spirits Heat Turbo Yeast is specifically intended for ambient temperatures above 30°C.
- Flavour-forward washes: Use a style-specific product such as Pure Distilling Whisky Yeast or Distiller’s Yeast Rum when making a suitable grain-, malt- or molasses-based wash.
Follow the selected yeast’s instructions for batch size, sugar quantity, temperature and required nutrients or enzymes. Do not assume that every sachet includes carbon or clearing agents, and allow fermentation to finish fully before clearing or distilling the wash.
