This handheld refractometer measures wort from 0–32% Brix, with a wort-specific-gravity scale covering approximately 1.000–1.120. It needs only a few drops, making it convenient for checking hot-side brewing samples without filling a trial jar.
How to use the refractometer
- Calibrate with clean water according to the supplied instructions.
- Place a small, well-mixed sample on the prism.
- Close the cover plate, point the instrument toward a bright light and read the boundary line.
- Clean and dry the prism after use.
Important: Alcohol affects refractometer readings after fermentation begins. Use a suitable correction calculator, or confirm final gravity with a hydrometer.
Helpful addition
A 3 ml pipette makes it easy to place a small sample on the prism without contaminating the batch.

Hydrometer options
For direct gravity readings from a larger sample, compare the standard three-scale Hydrometer or the colour-banded Easy Read Hydrometer.
Hydrometers require a suitable test jar but are generally easier to interpret once alcohol is present. Continue to use an appropriate correction method for fermented refractometer samples.
