Distilling with a Grainfather: Equipment and Setup Guide

Quick answer: a G30 uses the compatible Still Spirits Create+ Alembic Copper Dome and Condenser for pot distilling. The G40 and G70 use a dedicated Grainfather distilling lid plus the attachment made for either a T500 Reflux Condenser or a T500 Alembic Condenser. These parts are not interchangeable between every Grainfather model, so begin with the brewing-system model and the type of distillate you want to produce.

Still Spirits Create+ Alembic Copper Dome and Condenser for a compatible Grainfather G30

First choose the distilling style

Alembic or pot distilling

Pot distilling is used when retaining more of the washโ€™s flavour and aroma is part of the aim. It is the relevant direction for characterful styles and can also be used for hydrosols or distilled water when the equipment instructions allow. Results depend on the wash, operating method, separation decisions and maturation โ€” the attachment alone does not create a finished spirit style.

Reflux distilling

Reflux equipment is designed to produce a cleaner, more neutral spirit by providing greater separation inside the condenser. It is the usual direction when you want a neutral base for later filtering, flavouring or liqueur making. The G40/G70 attachment kit connects the brewing systemโ€™s distilling lid to a separately purchased Still Spirits T500 Reflux Condenser.

Equipment for a Grainfather G30

For a compatible G30, use the Still Spirits Create+ Alembic Copper Dome and Condenser bundle. The dome fits the compatible G30 opening and the copper condenser provides the pot-still vapour and cooling path.

  • Included in the bundle: copper dome, condenser, tri-clamp and gasket, thermometer, cooling and distillate tubing, tap adaptors and instructions.
  • Also available separately: the Create+ Alembic Copper Dome and Create+ Alembic Copper Condenser.
  • Do not substitute: the G40/G70 distilling lid and attachment kits are designed for those larger systems, not as a replacement for the G30 dome setup.

Equipment for a Grainfather G40 or G70

The G40 and G70 require the dedicated Grainfather G40/G70 distilling lid. After that, choose the attachment that matches the condenser you intend to use.

Important: an attachment kit is not automatically a complete still. Read the product contents carefully and confirm that you have the correct lid, condenser, clamps, seals, cooling connections and collection equipment before heating anything.

What else you will need

Required

  • A suitable fermented wash: fermentation must be complete and appropriate for the intended process before it enters the boiler.
  • Reliable cooling-water supply and drainage: the condenser must receive continuous cooling in the direction and flow specified by its instructions.
  • Heat-safe collection vessels: use stable, suitable containers and leave enough working room around them.
  • Cleaning equipment: clean the boiler, vapour path, copper and hoses according to the instructions before first use and after each run.
  • Measuring equipment: use the correct instrument for the liquid being tested. A brewing hydrometer and a spirit alcoholmeter serve different purposes.

Depends on the setup

  • Tap adaptors and extra hose may be needed to suit your water connection and drain location.
  • A controller or power mode setting may differ by Grainfather generation; use the instructions for the exact controller fitted to your unit.
  • Filtering, dilution, oak, botanicals or flavourings belong to later process stages and depend on the spirit being made.

Before the first run

  1. Read the complete instructions for the Grainfather system, distilling lid or dome, attachment kit and condenser.
  2. Confirm every component is intended for your exact Grainfather model.
  3. Inspect clamps, seals, pressure-relief features, tubing and cooling connections.
  4. Clean the complete liquid and vapour path as directed.
  5. Set the equipment on a stable, heat-resistant surface in a well-ventilated area, away from flames and ignition sources.
  6. Plan continuous supervision from heat-up until the equipment is safely switched off and cooled.

A safe high-level workflow

1. Prepare and check the wash

Only load a suitable completed wash, leaving the headspace required by the equipment instructions. Solids and foaming ingredients can affect operation, so follow the recipe and still instructions rather than filling to the boilerโ€™s rim.

2. Assemble the correct vapour path

Fit the G30 dome and condenser, or the G40/G70 distilling lid and selected attachment, exactly as shown by the manufacturer. Never create an improvised sealed system and never block a pressure-relief feature.

3. Start cooling before collection

Connect the water supply and drain securely. Establish and check the required cooling flow before collecting distillate, then monitor it throughout the run.

4. Heat and supervise continuously

Use the controller and power guidance for the exact Grainfather model. Stay with the operating equipment. Keep the collection area stable and respond immediately to leaks, unusual vapour, loss of cooling or abnormal pressure.

5. Separate and assess according to the method

Collection and separation depend on the condenser type, wash and intended result. Follow the current manufacturer process rather than applying one fixed volume or temperature rule to every run.

6. Switch off, cool and clean

Turn the heat off before disconnecting anything. Allow the system to cool fully, dispose of remaining liquid appropriately, then clean and dry all parts as instructed. Copper surfaces naturally change appearance but still require correct cleaning and care.

Critical safety points

  • Alcohol vapour and high-strength distillate are flammable. Keep the equipment away from flames, sparks, smoking and unsuitable electrical equipment.
  • Never leave operating distilling equipment unattended.
  • Never seal the vapour path or disable a pressure-relief feature.
  • If cooling water stops, vapour escapes, a connection leaks or the equipment behaves unexpectedly, turn off the heat and follow the manufacturerโ€™s shutdown guidance.
  • Do not taste high-strength spirit during operation. Measure and dilute only with suitable equipment and methods.
  • Keep children and pets away from hot equipment, hoses, cords and collected distillate.

Common questions

Can the G30 use the G40/G70 distilling lid?

No. The current G40/G70 lid and attachment products are listed for those larger systems. A compatible G30 uses the Still Spirits Create+ Alembic Copper Dome and Condenser setup.

Does the G40/G70 attachment kit include the condenser?

No. The reflux and alembic attachment products connect the Grainfather lid to the appropriate T500 condenser. The product descriptions identify the condenser as a separate purchase. The bundle versions add the required G40/G70 distilling lid, not the condenser.

Can a reflux attachment make a characterful whisky or rum?

A reflux condenser is aimed at cleaner neutral spirit. When retaining more raw-material character is the goal, the compatible alembic or pot-still direction is normally the relevant starting point.

Why is no distillate appearing?

Do not simply increase power or dismantle hot equipment. Confirm the controller is in the correct mode, cooling and vapour paths are assembled as instructed, and there are no leaks or blocked outlets. If the cause is not clear, switch off safely and consult the exact manual.
