Air Still Essential Oil and Hydrosol Distillation

The original Still Spirits Air Still can use water distillation to capture aromatic hydrosol and a small quantity of essential oil from suitable plant material. The hydrosol is normally the main output; essential-oil yield can be very low and varies greatly by plant, freshness, preparation and season.

This guide is for the original Air Still. Do not transfer its loading method to the Air Still Pro botanical basket or another still: botanical infusion for gin and hydrodistillation of plant material are different processes.

What you will need

• A correctly identified plant known to be suitable for hydrodistillation.
• Clean potable water.
• The original Still Spirits Air Still with an undamaged seal, working fan and clear outlet.
• Clean heat-resistant collection vessels, preferably several smaller ones for monitoring the run.
• A clean pipette, oil separator or small separating vessel for any oil layer.
• Suitable gloves and eye protection for handling concentrated oil and hot equipment.

Choose plant material carefully

Use only correctly identified, clean plant material from a known source. Avoid plants treated with unsuitable pesticides, roadside material, mouldy growth and any unknown or toxic species. A plant being fragrant does not mean its concentrated oil is safe for skin, food, pets or inhalation.

Remove soil and unwanted debris, then prepare the material as recommended for that plant. Keep it loose enough for water and vapour to move through it. Finely powdered material can foam, settle densely or obstruct the process.

Loading the original Air Still

• Clean the boiler and head so no alcohol, flavouring, detergent or previous botanical aroma remains.
• Add the measured plant material and potable water using the current manufacturer guidance. Keep below the Air Still’s maximum fill level.
• Ensure there is enough water for the complete planned collection. Never load the boiler with dry plant material alone.
• Do not add alcohol, spirit flavouring, carbon or fermentation ingredients to a hydrosol run.
• Do not use the infusion basket as a substitute for the original hydrodistillation method unless the manufacturer specifically directs it for that model and purpose.

Running the distillation

1. Seat the seal and head correctly, connect the fan lead and direct the nozzle into a stable collection vessel.
2. Operate on a heat-resistant surface with ventilation and keep children and pets away.
3. Confirm the fan starts and supervise the still continuously.
4. Collect in smaller fractions so changes in aroma, clarity or cooked character are easier to detect.
5. Stop at the manufacturer’s stated collection limit or sooner if the aroma quality falls. Never continue until the boiler is dry.
6. Switch off, unplug and allow the equipment to cool fully before opening.

Separating essential oil from hydrosol

Allow the distillate to stand undisturbed in a narrow, clean vessel. Many essential oils form a thin layer on top of the hydrosol, although some are denser than water and may settle below it. Use a pipette or suitable separator to remove the oil without drawing off excessive water.

A visible oil layer is not guaranteed. Small Air Still runs often produce aromatic hydrosol with only droplets of oil. Do not keep distilling beyond safe limits simply to chase a larger yield.

Storage and labelling

• Use clean, compatible containers and minimise unnecessary air and light exposure.
• Label the plant’s common and botanical name, plant part, batch date and whether the container holds oil or hydrosol.
• Keep the concentrated oil away from children, pets, food and untrained users.
• Use reliable formulation and safety guidance for the specific plant before applying, diffusing or otherwise using the product.
• Discard any hydrosol or oil that develops unexpected cloudiness, odour, growth or contamination.

Essential-oil safety

Essential oils are highly concentrated and can irritate skin, eyes and airways. Do not ingest them or apply them undiluted merely because they were produced from a familiar culinary plant. Some oils are unsuitable during pregnancy, around children or pets, or with particular health conditions. The guide covers distillation only and does not establish a product as therapeutic, cosmetic or food-safe.

Cleaning between uses

Plant oils can cling to the seal, boiler and head. Once the unit is cool, clean it using the manufacturer-approved method, rinse thoroughly and inspect the vapour and outlet paths. If the Air Still will later be used for water or spirits, make sure no botanical aroma or cleaning residue remains.
